Catching the fun run ferry to a start line in the middle of nowhere, watching other runners warm up routines, being talked up the long hill as she walked by an old chap, and lots of friendly helpful people are memories she treasures. In 2003, Lesley completed the course in 2 hours 8 minutes. Three years later, she completed it in under 2 hours. In between working as a dental hygienist in down- town Auckland and racing at Wharf2Wharf events, Lesley has been coached by Barry Magee and regularly competes in marathon and Ironman events. With 39 marathons and seven Ironman competitions under her feet since 2002, Lesley is using this year’s Wharf2Wharf hilly challenge as an opportunity to build her strength as part of her training for Ironman Taupo in March, and the Mt Everest Marathon in May. ‘‘It’s a tough course and I don’t let the 25km ‘only’ fool me, as it’s a hard-out run in the most amazing scenery,’’ she says. ‘‘I reckon it’s a ‘must’ race Wharf2Wharf fun run and walk options are 25km Orapiu to Matiatia, 13k Orapiu to Onetangi, 12km Onetangi to Matiatia, and 5km Surfdale to Matiatia. Photo: RICHARD VAN KUYK Late start to summer A weather round-up for last year confirms a late start for summer that saw pohutukawa trees flowering over Christmas instead of from mid-November and late ripening for plums. The news comes from Mal- colm Philcox who operates the Waiheke Weather Station for NIWA, which monitors conditions. Total rainfall on Waiheke Island for last year was 1317mm, with a mean figure for the year of 1131mm. The heaviest daily fall was 79mm. February 2014 came top as the driest month, with just 23mm of rain, and the hottest as temperatures soared to 27.5 degrees. The coldest daily tempera- ture for the year was -2.2 degrees. Philcox says the hills started to brown off in early December but have recovered their greenness.
