Burns leave their victims physically and emotion- ally scarred -- often for life. Fortunately medical advances have reached the point where steps can be taken to minimise the long-term impact on people. That s why the Mad Butcher and Suburban Newspapers Community Trust is so keen to sup- port the National Burn Centre. Any one of us could require the unit s services at some point, chairman Sir Peter Leitch says. Some of the cases referred there now are absolutely heartbreaking and it s humbling to see how the staff and their patients cope in such extraordinary circum- stances. All of them are battlers and some are up against huge odds. We, through this campaign, can help by funding some much needed equipment to assist surgeons with their reconstructive and plastic surgery. I challenge the people of Auckland to join us in our efforts. It s very easy to bury your head in the sand and say it doesn t affect me. But the simple truth is it one day could -- no one knows what lies ahead. The Mad Butcher and Suburban Newspapers Community Trust was formed in 1998 and has so far raised more than $1.5 million for various causes. Beneficiaries have included Plunket, the North Shore Hospital Foundation, Cure Kids, Hospice, Diabetes NZ, the Cancer Foundation, the Starship Children s Hospital, Look Good Feel Better, the Meningitis Trust, Kidz First Children s Hospital, CanTeen and Macular Degeneration. The trust has also helped numerous schools with literacy and drug education initiatives. Its work with prostate cancer awareness and the Parkinson s Society is well documented as is its involvement with the newly launched League 4 Life Foundation. The big difference is that every cent goes to the causes, deputy chairman and Suburban Newspapers general manager David Penny says. There are no administration staff and trustees all volunteer. They even have to pay for their own tickets to the functions. The Waiheke Market- place is among the 16 Suburban Newspapers titles circulating be- tween Papakura and Kaikohe. We are very much a part of the trust and this is a fantastic opportunity to lend our support to something of benefit to our community, editor George Gardner says. I hope all of our readers agree and help us make a real difference through this campaign. Hannan can sit safely on local board seat Jim Hannan will not be challenged for his seat on the local board. Hauraki Gulf Islands Local Boards adviser Steven Boyd says after speaking to the deputy electoral officer there has been no notification of a recount for Waiheke. An election services spokesperson has con- firmed the service has not heard anything from the District Court and assumes there will be no recount. The court always con- tacts us if there is a recount requested.
