By JEROME GAVELLE High school juniors danced their hearts out at their end of year prom. More than 100 year 7 and 8 students were dressed to kill and proved how well they had retained their danc- ing lessons -- stepping out to perform foxtrot, waltz, cha-cha, limbo and rock and roll. Live music was pro- vided by Mano Pratt on guitar and keyboard, Manuel Kahura on drums and Chris Orange on double bass, who performed the musical styles the teenagers required to express themselves on the dance floor. Singer Leonie Perry joined the band for several jazz standards including The Girl from Ipanema and Summer- time. Teachers watched over the scene -- Bob Upchurch as master of ceremonies, and Dean Henwood, Asa Fowkes, and Jessica Tibbets as backup to help the kids with soft drinks. Year 7 teacher Sarah Hoult says: The prom is an end of the year cel- ebration and a way to wish farewell to the year 8 students. Poetry on sharing the earth Waiheke Primary School held an exhibition about sharing the earth. As part of this children were asked to try their hand at writing some poetry. In just 20 minutes student Luca Marincas produced this poem. If The World Was Shared I dream of a planet we can share, I dream of a planet of which we care. I dream of a planet that we love, Like the beautiful heart of a dove. I dream of a planet that we can sustain, Oh no! That would not be plain. That planet would have fame, It would be as easy as a game. I dream of a planet where money would not matter, We would all eat off a golden platter. If God s love was down yonder, On neglect we would not ponder. Who are we to say what colour is right? If you ask me it s one terrible plight. So come on brothers and sisters, love our pla- net, It s the only one we ve got, so love it! Thousands dial up santa Telecom s Santaline is now open and taking wish lists from all those keen for Santa to drop a goodie or two down their chimney. Already more than 70,000 hopeful children have called 0800-222- 222 to ensure their wish lists are received by the North Pole in time for Christmas. Waihekeans visiting Auckland should also check out the 27-metre tall Telecom Tree in Western Park, Pon- sonby, which has Santaline phone boxes at the base. Santa says each year he and Mrs Claus look forward to seeing what gift is most requested. We re keen to hear what Kiwi boys and girls will be looking for under their Christmas trees this year, Santa says. Wish lists can be submitted online at santaline.co.nz.
