This warning sign is at Little Oneroa beach. By LYNDAL JEFFERIES SWIMMERS are advised to play it safe'' and keep out of streams this summer. Water at the island's beaches is unpolluted and safe for swimming. But a history of high ecoli counts in stream water running on to some beaches is of concern to authorities. Safe Swim helicopters take samples of sea water at popular beaches for monthly testing. Tests of beach water at Little Oneroa, Oneroa, Surfdale, Palm Beach and Onetangi over a three- year period have not found negative results. But Little Oneroa stream has had high counts in the past and con- tinues to have a public health warn- ing at its entrance. Waiheke Wastewater Officer Mike Roxburgh says the most recent testing results have been good, due to monthly monitoring and follow up of septic system pump out bylaws''. Mr Roxburgh says it's best to play it safe'' despite the good results. The council generally recom- mends not swimming near stream outlets for 48 hours after heavy rain, in case of stream contami- nation by septic systems. I wouldn't recommend any chil- dren swimming in streams that run onto our beaches,'' Mr Roxburgh says. Anyone concerned about Waiheke Beach water quality can call Swim Safe on 0800 SAFE SWIM or visit the www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz to view recent test results.
