By JEROME GAVELLE Chilean musician Man- uel Prieto will launch his second album Monkey Desire this Saturday night at Planit in Ostend. The album reflects the musical influences songwriter and composer Manuel has gathered during his four years of travel around South America and in New Zea- land where he has been for almost a year. Monkey Desire con- tains original songs of a fusion called world beat Latin music, which fuses Latin American with funk, reggae and African rhythms and gypsy music, he says. Following the launch of his first album Nomad, Manuel started his world tour with a first stop in New Zealand where he has played at various venues and festivals, and on TVNZ s Breakfast. Chilean television is following him all day on Saturday to film a story on the Chilean artist s life in New Zealand. Manuel came to live on Waiheke Island last November where he started the Monkey Desire project. He likes to call himself an itinerant musician. He wanders around the world, inviting local musicians to join his band Manu da Banda. The band is often changing as I never stay long in the same place but it is also part of my goal to play my music with different musicians around the world. It gives me a fantastic opportunity to meet awe- some players from every country I visit and that gives a unique flavor to each Manu da Banda gig, he says. Guest artists Chilean folk-pop singer Carmen Salvador, reggae singer Mc Jha Red Lyon and DJ Cruz will open the event before eight-piece band Manu da Banda takes the stage to play the new CD. Doors open at 7pm. Entry fee is $10. DEADLINES Waiheke events are listed free of charge subject to space availability and may be removed without notice. The deadline for listings is Friday, 4pm.
