By LYNDAL JEFFERIES An exhibitition of students' works in Owhanake Barn topped off the Waiheke Com- munity Art Gallery Summer School. One group worked with painter Clive Humphries to develop drawing skills in the field each morning and returned to the Barn each after- noon to create paintings using their sketches as a reference. Jeweller Andrew Last took another group of five students in a contemporary jewellery making course. Using found objects as starting points the students created necklaces, brooches and small sculptures. Waiheke artist Rose McLeod learnt the art of lashing from Andrew and created a series of small sculptures using petrified wood and found objects set in resin. Cathy Downes took part in Clive Humphries' class and says the summer school was stimulating but she was unsure at first. She says the first days were a little daunting and challenging''. After completing the course she is keen to con- tinue and is developing an art studio at her home. For students Trevor Bayly and Judy Jordan it was the sec- ond summer school in the Barn. Last year they took part in Stephen Mulqueen's drawing course. It has become part of our summer holiday,'' Mr Bayly says. It gets the creative juices flowing and it is a great way to start the year.'' Ms Jordan says: Clive is a first-rate teacher. He has a great ability to impart knowledge in a calm and lucid way.'' After the graduation drinks the students headed up to the Waiheke Community Art Gal- lery for the opening of Clive Humphries' exhibition of large- scale drawings started during his residency at the Barn last year. Barn owners Geoff and Lesley Land say they have sev- eral headland artists coming to camp out the back this week when the installation of the 2.5km sculpture walk begins.
