By LYNDAL JEFFERIES As the headland sculp- ture walk opens its tracks to visitors this week, the Waiheke Com- munity Art Gallery opens its doors with com- panion exhibitions feat- uring small sculptures and maquettes. The 2011 Small Sculp- ture Prize National Award for freestanding and wall sculpture opens at the gallery at 6pm this Friday. The exhibition opening will include an award ceremony where guest selector Dr Peter Shand will speak about his choice of works and the overall winner of the $3000 award. The selected artists come from all parts of the country, making it a truly national award, the first in New Zealand for small sculpture, gallery director Linda Chalmers says. We are thrilled to have two international entries, Robert Hague and Barbara Licha, and also two Waiheke artists, Kiya Nancarrow and Oli- ver Stretton Pow, are part of the line-up, Ms Chalmers says. The award for small sculpture started in 2009. It was a huge suc- cess, Ms Chalmers says. Once a new sponsor is confirmed, we are plan- ning to continue it as an annual event in the gal- lery s calendar to comple- ment our Walker & Hall Art Award for two- dimensional work. The gallery is also offering viewers the opportunity to engage in smaller more intimate works following their experience of large scale works on the Matiatia Headland. The headland Ma- quette exhibition, which also opens on Friday evening, will display small works by some of the artists taking part in headland Sculpture on the Gulf. The artworks will be available for pur- chase.
