Rose eng Fireside dinner with Hawkesby Rollicking raconteur: John Hawkesby will be offering his knowledge of far flung wines at three dinner evenings. Back by popular demand this winter will be the fireside dinners at Cable Bay Vineyards hosted by the eloquent and enter- taining John Hawkesby. The ex-television host turned wine expert Mr Hawkesby will educate and enthuse the diners on the merits of the viticultural practices of Italy, South Africa and Argentina on three dif- ferent Friday evenings. Each evening will con- centrate on one country with resident chef Will Thorpe preparing a four- course dinner reflective of the country to accom- pany the wines. Mr Thorpe is not yet revealing what the menus will be because he likes to keep his options open but says they will feature hearty, rustic food to fit the season''. He is also promising interesting cuts of meat'' that the diners may not have tasted or tried to cook before as well as styles of food that maybenewtothem-- particularly South African and Argentinian cuisines. And while the punters dine Mr Hawkesby promises to be standing by the roaring fire goading the audience''. I'll make sure they have a rollicking good evening. I will be racon- teuring until the wheels come off the audience,'' he says. The first evening will feature the wines of Italy. Having spent five weeks this summer trav- elling between the great vineyards of Italy in a trip teed up by wine- maker Danny Schuster, Mr Hawkesby has first- hand experience of the Italian wine industry. He hasalottosayinits favour and admits Italian wines are now his favourite. My Desert Island' wine would be a wine from Italy. They are so good with food -- abso- lutely sublime.'' He says for years the Italian winemakers rested on their laurels'' but since the 1980s there has been a renaissance. Where previously Italian wines were on the fringe, they are now especially good but with so many options avail- able potential quaffers need to be taken by the hand'' to make the right choices, he says. The second evening will concentrate on the coming of age'' of the wines of South Africa. Despite having a brilliant climate for wine'' Mr Hawkesby says the South Africans have only recently picked up on the new viticulture techniques. More atten- tion to detail within the vineyards has seen them come in from the wilder- ness and varietals expand from the pinotage usually associ- ated with South Africa to some magnificent whites especially chenin blanc''. The final evening will cover the wines of Argentina. The fact the three evenings cover wines from three rugby playing nations is not lost on Mr Hawkesby and he describes the malbec wines for which Argentina is famous as like a big, front row for- ward red wine''. With his own vineyard producing malbec, Mr Hawkesby admits he enjoys the big, gutsy flavourful red grape''. He is quick to add, however, vegans and strict vege- tarians should stay away'' because the wines are perfect with a large steak. He says with land and labour so cheap in Argentina, and with many of the vineyards using the expertise of Australian and New Zea- land viticulturalists, the wines are great value for money -- cheap as chips'', he says. Diners at the three evenings will get the opportunity to try a selection of wines from the country being fea- tured along with vintages produced by Cable Bay to compare and contrast. Mr Hawkesby says the evenings will be a chance for him to share his first- hand experiences of wine-making and tasting but more importantly diners should expect to have a thoroughly rol- licking good time''. Fireside Dinner with John Hawkesby is on May 13, June 3 and 24. Tickets are limited. Phone 372-5889 or email email@example.com to book.
