By LYNDAL JEFFERIES SAHARA ADAMS is delighted her artwork has been chosen to front the Starship Mobile Phone Appeal. A drawing she created of her pink and white mobile phone as a superhero can now be found on t-shirts, Mini cars and envelopes. The 12-year-old Te Huruhi School student is six months into a gruelling two-and-a- quarter year treatment plan for leukaemia. She has been passing the time during her chemotherapy at Starship Hospital by drawing cartoon characters of the people and things around her. Nurse Sally, Nosey Norbet, Mr Injector and Dr Pickle are among characters she has created. Sahara is following in the footsteps of her mum Sandra Adams who is well known for her paintings of Waiheke landmarks and portraits. Having her artwork chosen for the campaign has been a real boost for Sahara,'' Sandra says. The mobile appeal was first launched in 2009 and encour- ages New Zealanders to post their old mobile phones to Starship or leave them at drop off points. The phones are repaired or recycled, with all proceeds going to the children's hos- pital. Actor Shane Cortese and ZM DJ Jay Reeve have been promoting the campaign in the t-shirts as well as actors from Go-Girls and The Almighty Johnsons. And a black Mini was emblazoned with the super- phone image on its hood and side for the 2011 Pork Pie Charity Run at Easter when 40 Mini drivers retraced the steps of the iconic Kiwi film Goodbye Pork Pie. Sahara is having a rest break at home on Waiheke between treatments. Her final eight weeks of chemotherapy finishes at the end of July. All going well she will then change to a 12-week cycle of treatment which will repeat until March 2013. Sandra says good results at the end of Sahara's induction indicate that she is a fast responder'' to treatment. But nothing is guaranteed at any point,'' she says. Sahara is hoping her oncologist will allow her to return to school at the end of July. She has been conscien- tiously trying to keep up with her schoolwork, despite what she has been going through,'' Sandra says. She is amazing -- a wonderfully strong girl, she never moans or complains and is full of smiles and love for everyone.'' Sandra says they are blessed to live on this island''. The family has received support from the Jassy Dean Trust and many businesses and individuals. And friends are running a dinner roster which provides the family with a meal most nights. All of this is helping them get through an immensely uncertain time'', Sandra says. Donations can be made to the Sahara Sunshine Fund at the ASB bank in Oneroa. To donate a used cellphone, freepost envelopes are available from any branch of ASB Bank, Barfoot & Thompson, Telecom, The Warehouse and Vodafone.
