Full Stop reunites for Sahara Good time ska band: Full Stop will reunite for a one-off gig to support 12-year-old Sahara Adams and her family. By JEROME GAVELLE One of the island's favourite ska bands is reuniting to raise money for 12-year-old acute leu- kaemia sufferer Sahara Adams and her family. Full Stop bass player Mike Brennan says the gig has been confirmed and will take place on June 11 at The Bay. Sahara is six months into a two-and-a-quarter year treatment plan. She has so far had 20 blood transfusions, 60 nights in hospital, naso-gastric feeds, 12 general anesth- etics, bone marrow biopsies, endless blood tests, and an anaphyl- actic reaction to chemo- therapy for which she had to be adrenalised twice. It was very scary,'' Sahara's mum Sandra Adams says. Sandra says her daughter had a stroke- like reaction to chemo resulting in loss of movement down her left side which was beyond scary''. She has also under- gone an MRI and CT scan, antibiotics most weeks, chemo administered by lumber puncture, IV, jabs in the leg, tablets, and all the horrid side effects to go along with them which are too many to list''. It is a very tough journey but Sahara has had 400 beads of cour- age,'' Sandra says. This very tough journey has touched many people on the island, including Full Stop band members, who have been helping the family however they can. Success hit the band as soon as it started performing on the island in 2008. Full Stop performs a mix of cover songs from 1980s English ska bands like The Specials and The Beat as well as some originals. Full Stop went on to support iconic Kiwi reggae band Herbs at the Kings Arms in Auckland and opening the Ohakune Winter Festi- val in June 2009, after which band members went their separate ways. Mike Brennan says: At this point this will be a one-off gig for Full Stop, as band members are committed to other projects so ska fans should not miss out.'' Sandra says: We were completely overwhelmed and tearful when Mike came to us with his idea. We know how busy people's lives are and just continue to be humbled by people's gen- erosity.'' She says that music is Sahara's passion and it is what gets her through -- blasting her CDs while doing her school work, singing at the top of her voice and playing her guitar or piano. She has written a song about what she is going through. Music puts a big smile on her face, so it is really nice that music is supporting her in some way,'' San- dra says. Getting on with the Wiggles Giggling with the Wiggles: Sahara Adams meets The Wiggles at Starship Hospital. By LYNDAL JEFFERIES Sahara Adams' cancer treatment has included fun stuff'' thanks to some famous perform- ers. Twelve-year-old Sa- hara met the Wiggles when they visited Starship Hospital last month. The Australian children's entertainers took time out from their national tour to visit the children's can- cer ward. They were huge, all really tall -- my favour- ite was Anthony,'' she says. They really cheered everyone up.'' Sahara also met comedian Rhys Darby while in hospital, who she says is a regular visitor to the hospital''. It's nice that there is some fun stuff,'' mum Sandra Adams says. Now Sahara's having her own taste of fame, because her artwork of her own mobile phone being turned into a superhero has been chosen for the new look of the Starship Mobile Appeal -- see P1.
