Photo: SOPHIA HOADLEY KIDs weren t sheepish when they chose a Waiheke book as their favourite. Baa Baa Smart Sheep scooped the highly coveted Children s Choice category at the 2011 New Zealand Post Children s Book of the Year Awards. The children s book, written by Mark Sommerset, illustrated by his wife Rowan and published by the pair s own company Dream- boat Books, won with a clear majority. The judging panel said: With snappy dia- logue and hilarious illustrations, Baa Baa Smart Sheep is a laugh-out-loud story that leaves you thinking sheep aren t as stupid as we might think. Mark and Rowan are so thrilled their publication was picked as the best book of the year by the children of New Zea- land. Not only are they our pri- mary audience but also, in many ways, they are the toughest of critics, he says. If a bit of sheepish trickery and a handful of smarty tablets inspires kids to laugh and to read, and to laugh and read again, then that s got to be good. The Sommersets received a cash prize but say the award is worth much more to them as they set about growing Dreamboat Books into a recognised and respected inde- pendent publisher. The media exposure, goodwill and excitement that the children s choice award elicits throughout New Zealand is priceless to us. Other books by Dreamboat are Cork on the Ocean, Cork and the Bottle, and The Silliest Dream. Mark has already started his next book which involves two little bugs sitting on a leaf -- one on the top, the other underneath . He and Rowan aim to publish in October. Acclaimed Canterbury author Margaret Mahy and internationally recognised Dunedin illus- trator David Elliot won The New Zealand Post Children s Book of the Year Award for their picture book The Moon & Farmer McPhee.
