The official closing day and prizegiving for the 2010-11 bowling season was held at Waiheke Bowling Club on May 21. The day started off with a competition between the women's fours champions -- Sera- fina Hall, Raewyn Neil- son, Deborah Pain and fill in for Marion Jones, Margaret McIlroy, and the men's fours cham- pions -- Michael Hay- sham, David Pearse, Andrew Cottrell and fill in for Graham Robinson, Wili Etika. The ladies were dressed up as little devils but didn't have enough dirty tricks up their sleeves to defeat the men's team. Other members of the club enjoyed a roll up for the final official bowling day and some keen compe- tition made for an enjoy- able afternoon's play. The prizegiving fol- lowed with more than 40 members in attendance alongside special guests, life members Vi Cross, Farley Scott and Mick Sparkes, Sue Curran and Graeme Bennett rep- resenting the Umpire's Association, Howard Sandler from Auckland Bowls and Keith Ansell from New Lynn Bowling Club. A special part of the prizegiving saw Janice Paap awarded a Bowls New Zealand Coach Trainer certificate from Bowls New Zealand representative Howard Sandler. Only a few people qualify for these certificates so the club is very proud that Janice has been chosen for this role. Janice works fre- quently with the under- 25 players and is well liked and respected because of her ability to make it fun. Andrew Cottrell made a special mention of the sponsors who had helped the club during the year and presented Bob Graydon with Scott Cottrell's autographed New Zea- land Under-25's Rep- resentatives bowling top. Although the official season has ended there will still be bowling throughout winter. Now is a good time to contact the club if you are interested in playing bowls. Throughout winter we will be running mini tournaments every sec- ond Sunday and Wed- nesday afternoon at 1.45pm for a 2pm start. Call the club on 372-7108. -- Janice Hinch Be Eco Smart says council Auckland Council is encouraging companies to sign up for the Eco Smart Business pro- gramme.
