By GILL ALCOCK The end of Matariki will be acknowledged with a family day and hangi at Piritahi Marae in Blackpool. The event this Sunday is called WaeWae Atawhai -- Giving Legs to Kindness -- when the island's kumara garden- ers are inviting everyone to join together as one. Spokeswoman Huhana Davis says: This occasion specifically acknowledges the legacy of the kumara growing now permeated widely within our community through schools, Forest and Bird members and the wider Waiheke com- munity growers as a leg- acy gifted by Koro Kato Kauwhata of Nga Puhi, past spiritual leader of our community of many years. The guardian of the kumara being Rongo- matane -- God of Peace.'' The day starts with a powhiri at 10am. From 11am until 1pm there will be music and enter- tainment along with stalls to peruse and activities for children, and a silent art auction will run throughout the day. After marking the end of Matariki at 1pm with a blessing by Rever- end Peter Steed, the hangi -- with a vegetar- ian option -- will be served from 2pm for koha. The event will fin- ish at 4pm with a kara- kia and thanks. Donations of hangi meats and vegetables are welcome and can be dropped off at the Hau Ora building at the marae gateway or brought to the marae on Saturday. Musicians or local fundraising stalls are welcome to join in. Proceeds from the event will go towards the ongoing island garden initiatives.
