There's a heap of entertainment for the kids during the school holidays, from the Rec Centre programme to art classes at the Red Shed. Two of the activities are featured here -- the rest are in our event section on page 23... Audience participation: Gabriella Canestri joins Andy the Magician to try her hand at magic. One of the most popular children's entertainers -- Andy the Magician -- is returning to the island for another show to raise funds for the Waiheke Playcentre. The fun and games will take place at the Palm Beach Hall on the first day of the school holidays -- Monday, July 18 at 11am. Andy promises family entertainment using puppets, music and fun routines. His shows also feature Twinkie the rabbit who performs his own cheeky stunts and tricks. Entry to Andy the Magician will be $5 per person. The Red Shed has extended its school holiday programme to offer six days of winter art activities a week this July. Programme co-ordinator Jennifer Fountain says winter can be tough for parents as many usual island activities for kids involve being outdoors. The programme promises "wild and woolly winter fun" with pom-pom making, rug weaving and yarn dolls. Mum and daughter duo Bella and Jacqueline Joseph are joining the teaching team with funky felt jewellery-making, and a dream-catcher workshop. The aim of the Red Shed is to "inspire emerging artists on their creative journies", Ms Fountain says. "We use high quality materials and skilled art teachers to teach real art skills which children can use to develop as young artists." A special addition to the winter programme is Saturday morning ceramic painting with Veronika Ziemke from the Creative Dish, who will have a drop-in class from 10am to 12 noon which offers a range of slip cast animals, butterflies, cups and plates available for children to paint with glazes. Prices vary per item. The programme runs from 10am to 12 noon from Monday to Saturday July 18 to 30. Phone 372-9367 for more information.
