By LYNDAL JEFFERIES She's been a very brave girl and really good about the endless tests and procedures. Mum Mary Harvey In remission: Loren Harvey has received over 700 beads of courage for treatment since April. FIVE-YEAR-OLD Loren Harvey is in remission after being diagnosed with an acute form of leukaemia six months ago. Her parents Mary and Antony Harvey have been in survival mode'' since April 8 when Dr Bar- nett Bond visited them at home to tell them Loren was seriously ill. Mrs Harvey consulted Dr Bond after noticing Loren was tired, clingy and bruising easily. When I heard the news it was like all the air had been sucked out of me. But we went into survival mode, we had to be strong for Loren. We got on the 11pm boat and Loren received her first blood trans- fusion at Starship that night,'' she says. Since then Loren has received over 700 beads of courage, each one representing a medical procedure she has gone through in the past six months. Acute myeloid leukaemia is a fast progressing cancer which is treated with an intense programme of chemotherapy. Loren has been in hospital almost continuously in the last six months. Her mum and dad have taken turns caring for Loren in hospital or her sister, three-year-old Emily, on Waiheke. Now they have reached the light at the end of the tunnel'' they want to share their story with other fam- ilies. They say early diagnosis may help another child. We are so grateful to Dr Bond and Starship for acting so quickly to diagnose and treat Loren,'' Mrs Harvey says. Her first blood test showed 98 percent cancer cells in her bone marrow. After her first treatment it was down to 10 percent. We are very lucky that Loren responded so well to treatment. She's been a very brave girl and really good about the endless tests and procedures,'' she says. Acute myeloid leukaemia is aggressive but once it's treated and in remission the odds are good for patients -- most make full recoveries and go on to lead normal lives. When we heard the news that she was officially in remission we were overjoyed. Our family is back together under the one roof and we have two happy little girls skipping down the hall -- we are so grateful for those little moments now,'' Mrs Harvey says. We have so many people to thank -- Starship, the Child Cancer Foundation and the Jassy Dean Trust have been amazing.'' A garden has been dedicated to Loren at the annual SeaLink Jassy Dean Trust Garden Safari on November 12 and 13. Jackie Kerridge and Chris Reeve's prop- erty in Kauaroa Bay will be transformed into a Flower Fairy Garden with a wishing well for Loren, fairy cakes, bubbles and art activities. Loren is hoping all her friends will join her in their fairy dresses. Another milestone to celebrate is Loren's first day at Te Huruhi Pri- mary School on Monday. I love it,'' Loren says.
