As spring arrives the Waiheke Boating Club's dinghy group is planning its new season's pro- gramme. The club operates from the northern end of Oneroa Beach on Sundays and offers a variety of racing and social events. Over the years, club members have built con- fidence in many who have taken part with some going on to compete at national level. The club would like to acknowledge Adam Lap- sley and his team of volunteers for running the RYA learn-to-sail programme and, before Adam's watch, Gordon Dyer was responsible for initiating the pro- gramme. Unfortunately, with- out an RYA qualified person available this season, the club is unable to offer a learn- to-sail programme. The intention now is to encourage participation of junior and senior racing fleets at all levels and offer a combined course on Sunday mornings. Any families who pre- fer a supervised intro- duction to sailing of their own are welcome to join on the day, have some fun and take advantage of the advice and experi- ence available on the beach. Anyone interested in entering an Optimist, Laser, Jolly Boat or per- haps volunteering to assist is asked to email the club, indication their level of interest, at dinghies@waihekeboat club.co.nz. The fun starts with the Dinghy Opening Day barbecue on October 30. The club encourages new members whether they are sail or power boat focused, and has an active keel boat racing and cruising fleet. See www.waihekeboat ingclub.org.nz. Tennis back up The Waiheke Tennis Club opened its new season on September 17 and enjoyed all the exciting elements of spring equinox wea- ther. The courts were full as members took part in some rigorous warm-ups followed by fun games. Unfort- unately heavy rain and strong winds put an end to the cheerful start. To bring the morning to a climax everyone enjoyed an indoor barbecue at Margaret's. Members and non- members can now look forward to the start of the Business House Tournament on Octo- ber 20 at 5pm. This open tourna- ment is extremely competitive. Captains of previous teams are asked to get their team together for another exciting round of Business House competition. Contact Pete Syred by October 13 on 372-6941 or Monika Moy on 027-202-3860.
