ALL REDUCED www.tiles.co.nz Pooling resources for swim lessons Family pool: Swim Waiheke organiser Cara Tahapehi with Maia, 5, Ava, 7, and Carter, five months, who will be sharing their new heated outdoor family pool with 100 learn to swim students next term. By LYNDAL JEFFERIES One family s initiative to solve the swimming pool issue on Waiheke has seen its new heated pool booked out for the next six months. Cara and Mana Tahapehi have built an eight-metre heated outdoor pool at their family home in Blake St which will be used to teach a limited number of over-five- year-olds to swim. Cara is a professional swimming coach and has been teaching at the outdoor unheated swimming pool at Te Huruhi Primary School for seven years. While continuing lessons at the Te Huruhi pool over the warmer summer months, she will be extending the Swim Waiheke Programme to include the pool at home. The community has lobbied for an indoor heated swim- ming pool for 10 years, with more than $100,000 raised from events led by Other- world Productions and other initiatives. The former Auckland City Council pledged its support in the mid-2000s for a pool on Donald Bruce Rd but the Ministry of Education pulled the plug on funding. Now the downtown Tepid Baths are closed parents have even fewer options to teach their children to swim which on an island is not good enough . Cara says she has been amazed by the response to the learn-to-swim pro- grammes on offer, proving there s a strong demand from parents for their children to be safe around water. Last summer Swim Wai- heke had 400-plus enrolments and this year it s providing even more lessons and swim support staff. We are already fully booked for lessons in our heated pool at Blake St in term four, and next year s term one. Bookings for lessons in Te Huruhi school pool are also filling fast. The fact that our private heated pool is already booked out should send a strong message to the council and government about how much the island needs a public heated pool, she says. If our family can make it happen, surely they can pro- vide one for our community. Swim Waiheke offers lessons for all ages from six- month-old babies to adults. The heated pool at the Taha- pehi home is not suitable for under-fives because of its depth but they plan to eventually build a platform to accommodate younger kids. Cara s personal goal is to see every child on Waiheke confident in the water before they start school . Swimming at the beach is part of life on Waiheke but there is a potential danger to children and adults who ven- ture beyond their physical capabilities, she says. Get into the water this summer The summer Swim Waiheke pro- gramme at Te Huruhi School pool on Donald Bruce Rd includes block courses for toddlers and babies, school- age children and adults from mid- November. Junior and senior swimming squads will train in the evenings and Sunday mornings are dedicated to lap swimmers. A free week-long Water Safety Edu- cation programme called Whanau Swim is also on offer for 100 children and their caregivers. Registration will be open in November at www.water safe.org.nz The school pool will also be open for public swimming every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5pm from mid-November to March. Phone Cara Tahapehi on 372-4262 or email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit Swim Waiheke on Facebook.
