The EQC Levy was increased as of February 1st, 2012 to a maximum annual levy of $172.50 per house insurance policy and $34.50 per contents policy. DID YOU KNOW Many insurers also took the opportunity to raise their premiums. Were pleased to say that our preferred insurance companies fall within the lower percentage of increase when compared to the wider market. Ray Urbahn is still set- ting marathon records at the age of 82. And he reckons he s run 82,243km since 1975. Not bad for a guy who took up running at lunchtimes to stop nod- ding off at his desk. Ray joined the Auck- land Joggers Club in 1972 when it started the Ports of Auckland Round the Bays fun run. He s had a long involvement with the popular event which is partly sponsored by Fair- fax New Zealand, owner of the Waiheke Market- place and its sister pub- lications in the Suburban Newspapers stable. Now he s considering the March 18 event and whether he ll line up with the many thou- sands of other Auck- landers taking part in the 40th anniversary jog around the waterfront. Ray has completed 67 marathons. The first was the Rotorua Marathon in 1975 which he has fin- ished 28 times. He s aiming to enter the New Plymouth Bay- leys Mountain to Surf on March 4 for the 16th time after setting an 80-plus age group record there last year of 4 hours 39 minutes. Then he will aim to better his Rotorua Mara- thon age record of 4 hours 46 minutes 7 seconds on April 28. Ray has also run marathons in Honolulu, Melbourne and the Gold Coast. The keen cyclist, bowler and vintage car enthusiast says he has no medical conditions, apart from the odd sprains picked up while running -- and he s only once not finished a mara- thon. That was during the Gold Coast marathon in 2007 when he injured a hamstring. Fitness is a habit he s developed over the years. I always feel better after a good run. Registrations for this year s Ports of Auckland Round the Bays are now open and can be done online at www.round thebays.co.nz. Entry is $10 for chil- dren 16 and under and $15 for adults. Proceeds will go to the Child Cancer Foun- dation, the Garden to Table Trust and the Make a Wish Foun- dation. Foodbank needs more donations Residents are being invited to make the spirit of Christmas last all year round as the island s only foodbank is stretched to provide for the needy. Waiheke Budgeting Services provides counselling and support services to families and individuals needing help with their fi- nances. One of these services is the foodbank. When lean times strike and the foodbank is called upon, staple foods are forwarded and support is provided. The foodbank relies heavily on the goodwill of the community to provide non-perishable food items to maintain a ready supply. The churches provide year-round support along with the Red Cross and anonymous donors. Businesses like Vital Wellbeing Family Chiropractic got behind the cause at Christmas to provide hampers, and canvassed fellow businesses to contribute goods, services, food and toys. A community concert by Sister Shout, V12, Canto Isola and Te Huruhi Primary School choirs also helped out. Budgeting Services manager Leigh Alex- ander says the service is very grateful for the extra support and gen- erosity from groups, businesses and in- dividuals over Christ- mas, but the need for food continues. It s coming into win- ter and power and food bills will be increasing, she says. Petrol prices aren t going down and in- surance costs are going up. Rent is also going up on the island. This places the greatest stress on families. Phone Ms Alexander on (09) 372-6300 to donate non-perishable food, money or gifts. Crisis response team rewarded Four members of the Waiheke Emergency Preparedness team have been rewarded for their work in helping evacuees in the Christchurch earthquake. Mary Bertrand, Laurie Leonard, and Colleen and Michael O Hagen were presented with a specially minted com- memorative Red Cross coin by Auckland Red Cross emergency re- sponse leader Graeme Langford on the first anniversary of the quake last Wednesday. The coin is exclusive to Red Cross Emergency response volunteers who helped during the Christchurch earth- quake. All four spent a week assisting evacuees from Christchurch, at Auck- land and Whenuapai airports, and at the wel- fare centre in Manukau. Secretary and treasurer of the Waiheke Red Cross Ms Bertrand says the presentation was unexpected. It was a surprise. It s a very nice coin, she says. HELP WANTED Volunteers are needed for the New Zealand Red Cross Annual Appeal from March 12 to 18. Collectors and team leaders are urgently required. Call 0800-733-276 if you can help.
