The 59-year-old owner of AO Place closed up at around midnight on Friday but couldn't turn away two hungry girls who banged on the door at 1.30am for takeaways. I put the chippy back on. They wanted cheesecake as well.'' Sharon closed up again and went to bed at the back of the premises. She was woken up just a few hours later by her neigh- bour urging her to get out because the takeaway shop was on fire. It was the lady from the bakery next door. She'd come to work at 4am and when her husband arrived a couple of hours later he saw smoke and got her to wake me up while he called for help. If it had been Sunday they wouldn't have been in until 9am. I would have been toast. I was bloody lucky,'' she says. Sharon opened the connect- ing door into the bakery and saw fisherman Terry Gallon banging on the door from out- side. There were flames above the fridge on the back wall. I was stunned and just stood there but Terry shouted at me to get out. I ran out the back and woke up my tenant Willy and we escaped.'' Four fire engines arrived at around 6.50am. Deputy fire chief Bruce Sciascia says fire safety investigating officers from Auckland spent the day at the scene of the undeter- mined electrical fire''. Sharon has been building up the business for four years and was about to sell and go on her big OE. She has no insurance and is left with nothing. But the goodwill of the community shone through. People have been beauti- ful. Customers arrived to hammer boards up. People I don't know turned up to ask if I was okay. I want to thank every- one who helped from dawn to dusk and the businesses that brought food.'' The former CYF worker says the generosity was hard to handle''. She's moved to Onetangi to pick up the pieces and start again. I'm a survivor and I sur- round myself with survivors.'' Sharon urgently needs to sell a commercial chiller and three pie-warmers.
