Runner up: Casita Miro's came second in the rural restaurant category. The names of two Wai- heke Island eateries were among those called out at the Metro/Audio Restaurant of the Year awards. Poderi Crisci was named runner up to Toto ´ in the Best Italian category but did one bet- ter in the Best Rural category taking top honours over Casita Miro which was runner up.Al Brown s Depot Eatery & Oyster Bar came out on top, winning the Restaurant of the Year. The awards were announced at an official ceremony in Auckland last week. The competition is judged by a panel of 12 experienced food indus- try people who are a combination of critics and professionals. The bookings are normally made under false names with the visits unan- nounced and all meals paid for. Judges were impress- ed by a resurgence of tra- ditional and classic foods with awards judge and Metro magazine editor Simon Wilson saying the fashion for local and homemade food is catch- ing on. Poderi Crisci manager Mike Ross says winning best rural restaurant was a stunning out- come . We were nominated in our first year and now we ve won it in our sec- ond year, so that plus getting runner-up in the best Italian category is an excellent outcome and has sealed a good year for us. Students crave perfect burger The quest for the per- fect burger is in the offing for Waiheke High School Hos- pitality students. Teacher Huhana Davis says the aspir- ation is to create the Ultimate Waihekean Dream Burger using as much local produce as possible. The students are looking for samples of foods like breads, salads, pickles, salsas and chutneys along with locally grown meats, fish, seafood or vegetarian options. More than 50 students will be involved in the compe- tition with profes- sional judges on hand to watch the prep- aration and presen- tation as well as ana- lyse the nutrient content and combined flavours. Anyone wishing to donate produce can email Ms Davis at davish@waihekehigh. school.nz or call 372 9093 and leave a message.
