IT IS an historic first. Five full teams of junior Rams all playing a home game on the same day. The milestone was achieved at Ostend Domain on Sunday. Managers and families organised a carnival atmos- phere with a bouncy castle, stalls, sausage sizzle and off- field games to celebrate. New uniforms were also revealed -- a bright white strip with the new Rams logo. Getting enough kit for all the players was a bit of a mission, club manager Matt Atiga says. It was only possible through the generous sup- port of donations from the community and grant funding from Pub Charity and Trillian Trust. Without this support the kids simply wouldn't have any uniforms.'' Mr Atiga says the reason for the big uptake in the sport has been moving the playing day from Saturday to Sunday. Now we don't clash with any of the other sports. Lots of these kids play other codes andcannowhaveagoat league. Waiheke has always had a problem fielding full teams. We've always played on the bare minimum. Now we should all have full strength teams.'' Junior league started three years ago with just five kids. Now we have five teams. I'm extremely proud'' Mr Atiga says. To bring our community together through sport and family engagement was our long-term goal and it is pleasing to have witnessed the results of three hard years of develop- ment come to fruition at our first junior home game day. There were many smiling faces -- both old and new and this is how strong club environments create even stronger communities. See- ing families out there sup- porting their children, dads lined up along the playing field being positive role models to their children, and mums providing that uncon- ditional support and cheer that only mothers can. All this goes a long way to estab- lish a sustainable com- munity club.'' The Fullers Junior Rams teams are: Under-6s, under- 10s, under-12s, under-14s and under-16s. All have coaches and managers.
