Coastguard s May- Day Appeal finishes tomorrow and Waiheke put the most money in the collection buckets. Coastguard s execu- tive officer Christine Haru says it was a repeat of last year s success. I ve heard snippets of great things in Can- terbury, Waiheke lsland, West Coast, Howick and Riverton. Last year Waiheke lsland raised the most money in the buckets and again this year. We ve been blown away by their efforts. They have raised $5340. Awesome job, Coastguard Waiheke lsland. Waiheke Coastguard volunteer crew chief Robb Henry says: While a great deal of time was given by some of our crew in the course of collecting, the overwhelming generos- ity of the members of the public was simply amazing. The funds raised will go toward the ongoing training costs of our volunteers. What an achievement by all concerned. Remember the theme: Train One, Save Many. Call goes out for flash mob seniors By GEORGE GARDNER Visit waihekemarketplace. co.nz to watch how a flash mob works. Join in: Choreographer Rahman Saleh will be teaching dance moves to a flash mob of over 65-year-olds. Auditions for the event are at 2pm on Tuesday at Morra Hall. If you re over 65 and want some fun this winter you can be part of a flash mob. This is the message from Ostend resident Billie Jor- dan, who is organising a sur- prise dance event that will feature at least 50 seniors dancing to the song Tik Tok by Ke$ha in a public place in August. Auditions will be held at 2pm on June 5 at Morra Hall. Dancers will need to commit to rehearsals with dance tutor Rahman Saleh at 2pm every Tuesday after that until the event. The exact performance venue and date cannot be released as the first element of a flash mob is surprise , Ms Jordan says. A flash mob is where the dancers come out of nowhere in a public place. The second element is sequence dance movement so it s not random. And the third element is a quick exit -- they disappear. They do it and they re gone. Ms Jordan says a flash mob of over-65s will help raise awareness of the ageing population. She works for non-profit organisation Lifetime Design which advocates for the eld- erly to be considered by gov- ernment and housing developers when building new dwellings, so people can live longer, happier, more independent lives. I decided to get Waihe- keans to make up the flash mob because they are the best people for the job. They are lovers of life, embrace new experiences and are up for anything. The older people who live on the island have a wonder- ful outlook -- they re an inspi- ration to all of us. Even if you re 100 years old, don t know how to dance, are in a wheelchair or use a mobility aid, we still want you to join the flash mob, Ms Jordan says.
