Still breathing: Luke van-Glabbeek comes sixth in the recent Sky Tower stair challenge raising money for the leukaemia and blood cancer charity. Volunteer firefighter Luke van-Glabbeek reached the top of Auckland s Sky Tower in the gruelling stair challenge with breath to spare despite wearing full uniform and carrying his kit. His time of 13 minutes and 29 seconds in the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge put the Onetangi fireman in fourth place out of a field of 84 competitors who wore their full kit but opted to carry their breathing apparatus and masks. Add in the other 32 masters and grandmasters in the donned male category and the 21-year- old came in sixth -- the same result he achieved last year. Josh Harrison was the first firefighter to com- plete the 51 storeys wear- ing full kit and breathing through his breathing apparatus. His time of 8 minutes and 39 seconds shaved seconds off his winning time last year, creating a new record. Paul Gerritsen, who came second in 8 minutes 54 seconds, was also beaten by Mr Harrison last year but in 2010 their positions were reversed with Mr Gerritsen taking the honours. This year s challenge was the biggest in its 11-year history with over 480 firefighters, both men and women, battling their way to the top of the Sky Tower. For the past seven years it has also been a fundraising exercise for the leukaemia and blood cancer charity. This year more than $318,000 was col- lected by firefighters. The spirit to compete for funds was apparent here too with Luke coming in 19th out of the individual fundra- isers with a total of $1751. Car washes out- side Placemakers by Waiheke volunteers plus individual dona- tions helped Luke achieve his total. Luke s months of training walking up Jacob s Ladder in Onetangi and running up Trig Hill Rd will con- tinue as he hopes to take part in the World Firefighters Games in Sydney in October. He says the event was named the tunnel by the Kiwis because after the 13th floor until the top you can t get in or out. This is a stairwell that is narrower than the Sky Tower. It s also like climbing up the inside of a steel ship. He will take the Sky Tower challenge again next year when he says he will push himself so he has no breath left. My sixth place donned male sec- tion finish means I need to focus a lot harder on my mental game. The fitness is there, I m just needing to up the game.
