New play: Hailey Hailstone and Bridget Oakley-Stevens in My Mother Said I Never Should, opening at Artworks Theatre on July 13. Audience will laugh, cry and get angry A warm, funny look at four generations of women will be the feature of the second production by the Waiheke Theatre Company opening on July 13. My Mother Said I Never Should by Charlotte Keatley comes hot on the heels of the company's first theatrical success, Abigail's Party. The play premiered in Manchester in 1987, and has since been performed worldwide and translated into 16 languages. Each of the four actresses plays her character as a young child as well as at pertinent points in their adult life. Director Lucinda Peterken says: ''This is an exciting opportunity for actors to really explore their potential. The child scenes are not childish, but a glimpse of the core of each character, later inhibited by the times they have grown up in. ''It should make the audience laugh, cry, become angry and feel nurtured, and certainly make them talk on the way home. The powerful and dramatic bond of love and jealousy is at the centre of the play and we see what happens if you break the sacred taboo of motherhood, and one woman gives away her child.'' Ms Peterken was looking to cast an entirely different play but when the four actresses -- Hayley Hailstone, Lucy McCarthny, Bridget Oakley- Stevens and Linda Savage -- came together, she realised they'd be a perfect cast for My Mother Said I Never Should. ''It is a play I have known for many years and worked on different scenes in various schools in my past but have always wanted to direct it in its entirety. I am so excited to be finally seeing it on stage. We have really enjoyed the rehearsal process -- it has been a wonderfully collaborative experience.'' Performances are at 7.30pm on July 13, 14, 19, 20, and 21 at Artworks Theatre. Tickets are available from the i-Site in Oneroa or phone Lucinda Peterken on 372 2770.
