By GILL ALCOCK Letting loose: A group of over-65s is having fun rehearsing at Morra Hall for a flash mob performance in August. Photo: SIMON CLARK Go to waihekemarketplace.co.nz to see a video of how a flash mob works. THE organiser of a surprise per- formance of over-65s is calling for volunteers to help out on the day of their live flash mob'' appearance. The Lifemark Flash-Mob will fea- ture around 80 Waiheke Islanders who will start dancing in a public place as if from nowhere. They have been rehearsing with choreographer Rahman Saleh since June and their performance will be in Auckland in August. But the exact day and location are being hotly guarded because the point of a flash-mob is the element of surprise. Organiser Billie Jordan works for the non-profit organisation Lifetime Design, which advocates for new houses to be built to a set of design standards that make it safe and easy for people to live in their own home for as long as they want. Within 20 years one-third of our population will be over the age of 65 years. We need to start shifting our thinking about how we design and build houses to ensure we can all live independent and fulfilling lives in our own homes as we age.'' She came up with the idea of the flash mob of older residents. Waihekeans embrace new experiences and are up for any- thing. The older people who live on the island have a wonderful outlook on life. They're an inspiration to us all.'' Ms Jordan is looking for volunteers to help with a number of tasks including crowd control, assisting camera crew, helping some of the elderly flash mobbers get into position, taking equipment on the ferry, and giving out promotional material. She says there will be only one chance to get it right because the live performance is only three and a half minutes long and is being filmed live. The more hands on deck, the bet- ter our chances will be at pulling off a brilliant performance that will look great on camera. There will be a lot of national and international publicity around it,'' Ms Jordan says. Helpers will be called The Mob Squad. Most of the duties don't require any lifting so people of any age and any physical ability can be of use. Anyone who wants to join The Mob Squad will need to be available between 10am and 1pm on the day. Information will be on a need to know basis. It's highly confidential. Give me a call,'' she says. Contact Ms Jordan in confidence on 372 9090 or email her on billiek email@example.com. Go to lifemark.co.nz for more information on Lifemark Design.
