And the Band Played On will take place at Art- works Theatre on August 3and4. Last year Andy Spence, violinist David Rawsthorne and pianist Reg Towers were in the Choral Society s Fiddler on the Roof. A year later they got together to celebrate the musicians who continued to play as the RMS Titanic went down. It was a one-off concert at Whittaker s museum. All the music at the two Artworks Theatre shows is from the official White Star Line song- book used by musicians aboard the RMS Titanic. Concerts start at 7pm. Ticket inquiries, email artworkstheatre@gmail. com or leave a message on 372 2941. From Mozart to fiery tango Live at Five: Dr Joe Harrop, left, and pianist Eddie Giffney promise something for everyone at this Saturday's performance. Joe Harrop of Waiheke and young Auckland pianist Eddie Giffney will play sonatas by Moz- art and Ravel, and tan- gos by Piazolla and Galli- ano at the next Live at Five at Whittaker s Music Museum this Sat- urday at 5pm. Organisers promise something for everyone -- 18th century refinement, French impressionism and fiery Argentine tango, all performed by the country s most in- demand music educator alongside New Zealand s top piano accordionist and prize-winning pian- ist. While Dr Harrop has been taking the Sistema Aotearoa orchestra social development programme in South Auckland from strength to strength, Eddie has been winning prizes with his piano playing, most recently in Tauranga, and with his piano accordion at the world championships last year in China, where he came 12th out of a field of 85 players. The accordion world champs were an amazing experience, Eddie says. It was great to play for and meet the best performers in the world, to swap pieces and com- pare instruments, which are actually tailored spe- cially to each player. Dr Harrop is excited to play again at Whit- taker s. It s wonderful to per- form with a talented player like Eddie. The Mozart sonata is elegant, sad, beautiful and funny, he says. The Ravel shows the composer s brilliance to weave melodies all the way through a work. He uses elements of jazz in a meaningful way that you can really hear. The tangos, when you perform them with a world class accordion player, make you want to strut around like some- one off Dancing with the Stars. They are passionate and fiery stuff. Tickets cost $25, there are concessions available but no eftpos facility. Phone 372 9627 for more information.
