Chopper on hand after tourist falls By GEORGE GARDNER Westpac rescue: The helicopter arrives and a medic gets ready to be winched down. Photos: JENNESS REEVE Emergency teamwork: Caroline Williams is winched to safety. A dramatic rescue saw an Australian visitor winched to safety after she slipped down on a walking track. Twenty-two-year-old Caro- line Williams broke her ankle in three places just after entering a track from Delamore Dr on a walk back down to Matiatia. She and her partner Aaron had been visiting her uncle Al Reeve and his wife Jenness for the day on Waiheke Island. The visit was part of a trip they had made to stay with Ms Williams sister in Auckland. Mrs Reeve says they had enjoyed a long walk and at the end of their visit decided to walk down to the ferry from Delamore Dr. "They had just entered the track when Caroline slipped," Mrs Reeve says. "I called 111 and the ambu- lance came really quickly. They assessed the situation and called the Westpac rescue helicopter. Caroline was very close to the road but she was quite inaccessible. Mrs Reeve says the helicop- ter arrived within minutes. "As luck would have it West- pac were out practising winch- ing! In no time at all there was a dot on the horizon. It was a very comforting feeling." The helicopter winched Ms Williams to safety and took her to Auckland Hospital for X-rays. Her partner was able to hitch a ride as well. Mrs Reeve says: "It s fantas- tic the way our emergency ser- vices work together like this." This year s Westpac Chop- per Appeal raised $380,402 for the Auckland rescue helicop- ter. The service relies on the generosity of the community to stay in the air. Donations can be made at chopper appeal.co.nz or any Westpac branch. Visit stjohnappeal. org.nz for information.
