Hard and fair wins the day Return trip: The teams of Waiheke and Huntly finished off the rugby season with a well played game at Onetangi Sports Park. Last year, at the end of the 2011 rugby season, the Wai- heke Sharks embarked on a road trip to play the Huntly Rugby Club Under 10 team. This year Huntly visited us, bringing a mixed Under 11 and Under 12 team, numbering over 30 kids, to play an Under 11/12 Waiheke team. The turnout from the Waiheke Under 12 team was amazing. Thanks boys, you helped make the game a great spectacle. The day was perfect for a fast-flowing game, with a slightly soft ground underfoot but a fine and sunny day. Waiheke supporters turned up in force to cheer on their boys. Not to be outdone, a very vocal and passionate group of about 35 Huntly supporters made for a bit of friendly rivalry on the sidelines and the field. The game began with Huntly receiving a deep kick from Wai- heke. Huntly immediately returned the kick with a strong attacking run. Within a fairly short time, the first try was scored by Waiheke, courtesy of Declan from the Under 12s. Before half time both teams scored again, Waiheke's second try courtesy of a strong run from Carlos. The second half was domin- ated by Waiheke with Carlos putting in some bone-crunching hits that left the spectators gasping. The scoring in the sec- ond half was opened by Liam James from the Under 11s who, running in support of Carlos, received a flick pass, and after beating several players scored under the posts for Waiheke's third try. After showing his usual bril- liance throughout the game, Tommy Beale was rewarded with Waiheke's fourth try, after receiving a nice pass from Liam James who broke away from the Huntly forward pack. The scoring continued with tries from Tom, another to Tommy Beale and a final self- converted try from Jackson Page. Final score Waiheke 39 Huntly 10. Despite being beaten, the Huntly team held their heads high and can be proud of their effort. Both teams played hard but fair with very few niggles being displayed by either team. After the game, a barbecue and drinks, generously donated by Fred' Fredericksburg, was enjoyed by the players and spec- tators. Thanks also to Maurice Nel- son for volunteering to referee the game. The overwhelming comments from the sideline were that Maurice's referring is consistently some of the best we have seen throughout the sea- son. Thanks also to Under 11 coach Hamish Cormack for organising a brilliant day. Darren James Seniors strut their stuff on the tennis court Best Latino: Renzo Benatto wins a prize at the spring Waiheke Tennis Club tournament. The Waiheke Tennis Club's opening tournament took place in the drizzle and cold. This did not dampen the spring in the steps of the largely geriatric members who, after courageously abandoning their pacemakers and disability walkers, started playing with plenty of sizzle -- especially when the barbecue was fired up. The seniors showed superb finesse and proved age is no barrier to winning.Ian Hamilton WINNERS Top prize for top score and top decibel squawking goes to Barbara Woods. She wins a year's free counselling. Runners-up are Theresa Dashwood, who wins a speeding ticket for serving the fastest serve of the day, and Loris Wysocki who wins a free trip to the Syrian tennis tournament for impeccable behaviour. Token prize to American John Miller for throwing a tennis racket the furthest. Ron Neil wins a camouflage suit as the silent achiever and Renzo Benatto wins a free English language course for the best Latino impersonator.
