When Jenny McKenzie joined a caregiving agency in Eng- land eight years ago, her view of the industry turned on its ear when she realised how much time was invested in looking after the elderly. She saw a niche market where flexibility was coupled with consistency and a focus on providing companionship and carer support could be achieved. After returning to New Zealand in 2009, Jenny felt confident an independent home-based care agency would provide a service to ensure the elderly could stay at home and maintain their independence and mobility. Clara Care was set up in Auckland and has now been made available to elderly Waiheke residents who are looking for an alternative to institutionalised care off- island. Jenny says: Often it can be a matter of what s the next step, maybe you need a stop- gap while considering what to do for the future and we ve found people don t readily ad- mit to needing help until there s a crisis. Assessing what a person needs to continue their cur- rent lifestyle helps make the solution clearer, Jenny says. You might want a carer in for a couple of hours a day, the whole day or a more per- manent live-in option. It s likely someone may need help with shopping or filling out a form or just companionship on a day-to-day basis. Home help could include personal care, like dressing and bathing, or general housekeeping like laundry, light cleaning or cooking. Short-term care options are also available when care after hospitalisation or illness is required, allowing flexibility without being tied into a long-term contract if and when a situation changes. Care begins with an initial assessment, made by a regis- tered nurse, followed by an evaluation every three months unless circumstances change. A carer is then matched with a client de- pending on their needs and the relationship is reassessed after six weeks to ensure it is a good fit for both carer and client. Jenny says the idea is for a carer to form a relationship with the person they are car- ing for and to feel a part of their lives. I have met so many people with amazing stories and his- tory from all walks of life. It s been a very humbling experi- ence to be a caregiver. Carer companions are cho- sen for their compassion, ex- perience, maturity and com- petency. Carers are fully trained, fluent in English and a security check is done prior to matching them with a cli- ent. Jenny says her experience of being on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, has made her realise caregivers need breaks too and has in place a second carer to be on hand when the primary carer is away. To ensure continuity of care, each day is documented by the carer to ensure any concerns are dealt with im- mediately and special re- quirements such as medi- cation are managed correctly. Clara Care is able to offer home-based care depending on the situation and can be priced on an hourly, daily or 24-hour rate making it a cheaper option than a rest home.
