By GILL ALCOCK NINE-YEAR-OLD Natasha Cun- ningham and her family will be making themselves scarce this weekend. The grounds of their home in Kennedy Point are about to fill up with punters enjoying the SeaLink Jassy Dean Trust Garden Safari. Theirs is one of 12 properties in this year s self-drive event which is the main fundraiser for the trust that helps sick Waiheke children and their families. Natasha s mum Debra says they have not had to use the trust s ser- vice but were persuaded to enter their garden by Placemakers Gar- den Centre manager and gardening personality Geoff Willsher. Geoff hadn t seen it for a few years, she says. He only got halfway down the driveway before he said he didn t need to go any further and we should be in. Geoff was right because the driveway off Kennedy Point Rd is pretty special. Various species of palms line the way down to the house that sits on a steep section overlooking Takirau Bay. Steep sections seem to be a fea- ture this year with several showing what can be done with some imagination. Bare sections turned into planting wonders are on offer as are plots that were once over- grown. Keen gardeners and nosy neigh- bours will love the chance to have a fossick through the ferns and a gander through the gardens this weekend. The self drive safari is on Sat- urday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Tickets can be purchased at each of the 12 gardens, Take Note and Waiheke i-Site in Oneroa, and at Fullers Matiatia. They cost $30 for a two-day pass. Children are free when accompanied by an adult. The Central Landscapes plant and book sale at Rangihoua Estate is also a huge fundraiser for the trust during the safari and has free entry. The Bayleys Waiheke Art in the Garden art auction at Roro- hara, Pie Melon Bay, is this Friday night. See P6 and 7 for ticket details and more on the safari. Go to waihekemarketplace. co.nz and click on Latest Edition or see the Waiheke Marketplace Facebook page for an e-book copy of the full brochure which is handed out with ticket purchases.
