It was a jolly scene at the Wai- heke RSA for its annual Chri- stmas lunch. Festive decorations and a Christmas tree were centre stage and members donned their party hats from Christ- mas crackers while listening to Pat Urlich croon some fes- tive tunes. Among them was the club s oldest member, 94-year-old Dave Johnson who served in World War II. He went away with the first Echelon from New Zealand and kept his true age to him- self. His RSA pal Joe Routledge says: Dave was only 20 and you were supposed to be 21 to sign up. He was the youngest sergeant to go to war. Now he s the oldest member of the Waiheke RSA! Mr Johnson served in World War II from 1939 to 1944 in the Middle East. Church gives schedule of services St Peter s Catholic Church in Oneroa is holding its Christmas and New Year services as follows: On Christmas Eve the first mass of Christmas will be at 7pm. Note there will be no midnight mass. Christmas Day mass will be held at 9.15am. New Year s Day s mass for the Feast of Mary the Mother of God will be at 9am. The weekend masses will be held on Saturday at 5pm and Sunday at 9.15pm. Weekday masses take place on Wednesdays until the end of January at 9am. Coastguard is keeping watch On guard: Members of the Waiheke Volunteer Coastguard will be on watch, as always, over the summer holidays. Committee members say coastguard has had a very proactive year of recruitment with the numbers in the unit growing. Crew chief Robb Henry says: We are now at a maximum number of volunteers that we can accommo- date. But as the attrition rate can be high, we expect to have more vacancies in the near future, with people moving off island and family circumstances changing. So even though all the lockers are spoken for and the shifts ros- tered, coastguard will still accept applica- tions, although it must be understood that processing will have to wait until new vacan- cies arise , he says. Waiheke Volunteer Coastguard reminds all those going out on the water to wear a life- jacket and follow water safety rules.
