By GEORGE GARDNER Endless education: Sean Holmes, 9, discovers he's holding a gurnard at the weigh-in. A HUSBAND and wife reeled in the lion s share of prizes at the annual family fishing competition organ- ised by Waiheke Rotary on Sunday. Dave Tong became King of the Bay for the day with his heaviest snapper of 6.88kg and Debbie Tong hooked ladies first-equal with Linda Grey. They each hauled in a 3.24kg snapper. The Tongs walked away with a combined $1800 but there were still more prizes to be had after a good day of fishing in calm, warm weather. For the first time in the competition s 12 year his- tory, the heaviest kingfish weighed more than the heaviest snapper. Sam Marshall netted the big one, which weighed in at 7.6kg. It was also the first time a trevally won the heaviest other species category. The 3.38kg fish was reeled in by Paul Clyde. And 11-year-old Porscha Coleman was chuffed with her 2.34kg snapper and got a special mention for reeling in a bigger fish than the boys winner, 15-year-old Jacob Penfold, with his 1.54kg snapper. The public fish auction proved a hit once again with the new addition of pre- filleted bags of snapper well received by hungry punters for dinner. The biodegradable bags used to bag up the fish have not gone unnoticed by the BYO Waiheke group which aims to rid the island of single-use disposable plastic bags. The group is giving Waiheke Rotary its first local hero award for an event. Waiheke Rotary president Greg Ogg says it was a great family day out. Thanks to everyone for their continuing support which makes the event a success and benefits the wider community.
