Cable Bay Vineyards has bought two vineyards in the lower Awatere Valley, in Marlborough. Winemaker Neill Culley says he was attracted to the area because of its reputation for high quality varietal wines. The vineyards cover 28 hectares on the lower terraces of the Awatere River. More than half the vineyard has high-density plantings suited to producing highly expressive individual wines , Mr Culley says. The varieties include sauvignon blanc, pinot gris and pinot noir. Cable Bay anticipates wines from this vineyard will join its highly regarded single vineyard wines from Waiheke and Central Otago. To develop a balanced business we wanted to create a good sustainable export market and that s not possible without a good sauvignon blanc and pinot noir, Mr Culley says. We already sell a good amount of both in our key markets -- Australia, the USA and the UK. Marlborough is recognised internationally as the leading producer of sauvignon blanc and we want to be able to control our quality going forward. Cable Bay Vineyards restaurant and winery is at 12 Nick Johnstone Drive, Oneroa. Phone 372 588. A taste of tapas at Casita Miro evening Spanish flavour: An evening of pintxos and cocktails are on offer this Friday at Casita Miro. Casita Miro will be hosting pintxos and cocktails night for one night only this Friday. The vineyard restaurant venue is known for its tapas which, in the Basque region of Spain, are called pintxos. General manager Will Thorpe says: ''A pintxo is a stick. When you have tapas in the Basque country they are offered on a stick. ''So you take the pintxos, eat them, and put the sticks on your plate, then they charge you accordingly.'' It won't be that complicated at Casita Miro. For $20 people will just eat what they like until the pintxos run out. A range of gin and sherry cocktails, and sangria, will be available for purchase, and entertainment by Spanish guitarist Alex Flamenco and piano accordion player Xavi Jardi will set the mood. Ole! Casita Miro will be open for pintxos and cocktails from 6.30pm on July 14. Phone 372 7854.
