Former broadcaster John Haw- kesby launched the appeal in this paper last week after he learned Auckland Council had made a dir- ect referral of the application to the Environment Court. There were more than 300 sub- missions from people wanting to be heard and they will have the oppor- tunity to do so in court by becoming what is known as a section 247 party. But they will have to be prepared for possible cross-examination and present their submission so it is not considered frivolous or vexatious . They will be up against experts arguing for the marina on behalf of applicants Waiheke Marinas. The Ministry of the Environment information about the direct refer- ral process says people may choose to seek professional help from lawyers and/or planners to decide whether or not to become a section 247 party. The experts may also help to complete the section 247 notice and prepare for the court hearing. John Hawkesby has set up a fund to pay for such help. He is asking individuals opposed to the marina for $10 to go into the war chest . The fund is at the Kiwibank (Oneroa Post Office branch) in the account name of Direction Matiatia Inc, account number 38-9015-0064534-00, reference ''donation''. By GEORGE GARDNER A fashion fundraiser for a sick teenager drew a good crowd despite torrential rain on Saturday night. The women s Style Exchange and a daytime workshop for teenage girls raised $4488 for the Kavanna Jade Trust. Kavanna suffers from life threat- ening chronic upper suppurative lung disease and chronic obstruc- tive asthma. She has spent 90 days at Star- ship hospital this year, and is now making weekly visits. This week she stopped going to Waiheke High School because she is too ill. She has enrolled with the Northern Health School which is part of Starship. She turns 14 tomorrow. Her mum Carolyn Ogg is delighted with how the events went. We had some really positive reviews from the teen workshop and the evening event had a really nice feel. I want to say a big thank you to Luke and Helen for donating The Venue, and to my committee -- Nicky Cairns, Debbie Yardley, Kel Douglas, Lauren Ivory -- and the many volunteers and helpers. Carolyn also pays special tribute to Mary Haddock and Megan Alitini from Mary TV. They did a great job with the auction. And Mary Estelle donated her whole day and evening. I want to say thanks to the com- munity for coming and being involved in such a great cause. We really appreciate it.
